“Playgrounds & Toys” is a unique international project conceived in 2000 by curator Adelina von Fürstenberg and the Non-Governmental Organization ART for The World, based in Geneva. Since its inception, more than fifty renowned contemporary artists, architects, and designers from around the globe have contributed to this ongoing project. “Playgrounds & Toys” brings together over sixty original models of playgrounds and educational toys, each created with simplicity and imagination. Each piece is designed so that the full-scale structure will be both affordable to make and strictly compliant with standard safety requirements, reflecting the cultural diversity of its creators and adapting to the needs of different communities worldwide. Over the past two decades, “Playgrounds & Toys” has been exhibited in high-profile international venues such as the Red Cross Museum in Geneva, GNAM in Rome, the Italian Cultural Institute in London, the United Nations Visitors’ Lobby in New York, the Oceanographic Museum in Monte Carlo, La Manufacture des Œillets in Paris, the European Parliament in Brussels, the Museo d’ Arte in Lugano, and Hangar Bicocca in Milan. Beyond exhibitions, several of the playgrounds have been built for schools and local communities in India, the United Kingdom, Armenia, Greece, China, and Tasmania, while toys have been distributed in refugee camps in Cambodia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania with the support of United Nations agencies.
